In Dances of the Persia: A Taste of Culture, solo dance artist and storyteller Kristina Koutsoudas alternates endangered dances with stories, poetry, and discussion to bring to life the beauty, elegance, and spirit of the culture from which they spring. These refined, artistic traditions are rarely seen in the US. Classical dance pieces include dances inspired by the Persian miniature paintings and poetry, often Sufi in origin. Folkloric dance includes the raqs-e dastmal or scarf dance, performed by the women of the Qashqai, often at weddings. Also called the hallay, this dance is said to celebrate the movement of the moon and stars. Audiences will also have the opportunity to learn dances.
